1898 .30-40 Krag rifle w/ ammo in Phoenix, Arizona For Sale
I have a very nice xxxx .30-40 Krag rifle that was beautifully sporterized decades ago. There are a lot of sporterized military rifles out there but you'd be hard pressed to find many that are done as nice.
The stock and barrel are original to the action. There is no rust at all and the bluing is in great shape. It was obviously refinished when they sporterized it. The action is buttery smooth as most Krag rifles were known for. The side mounted magazine box reliably feeds the rounds in. The original rear ladder sight has been removed and has a steel block dovetailed in it place and blued to match. In its place, a Lyman peep sight has been installed. The front sight is a modernized replacement with a brass dot on the sight post. The original barrel is in great shape with strong rifling and shiny bore. It is pretty accurate too. It was recently shot at 100 yards and was able to keep 3 round groups under 2 inches, and that's with the Lyman aperature sights and factory Winchester soft point ammunition. I would still consider this a viable hunting rifle.
The original stock forend has been shortened & re-shaped and has a diamond pattern inlay done with a lighter wood. There are a number of compression dents in the wood and some gouges near the butt plate but the stock has no cracks or repairs.The hand checkering is nicely done and straight as well. It's been out hunting but was never abused.
For it's age, it's a classic American hunting rifle from a bygone era that is still efective today. It's what our grandfathers (and great-grandfathers) used to put meat on the table with. The Krag sporter conversions were very popular during the 20's through the 40's as these rifles were surplus from Teddy Roosevelt's days. I don't know when this particular conversion was done but it was done some time ago. I picked this up from a friend several years ago after his father passed. It was his personal rifle and he took good care of his things.
With this rifle, I will include the leather sling and 33 rounds of factory loaded .30-40 Krag ammunition (and 7 once fired cases that were shot with this rifle).
